Israeli Navy Detains South Korean Activist on Sumud Flotilla

(MENAFN) A South Korean campaigner is reportedly being held by the Israeli Navy following an assault and interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in the Mediterranean, according to a news agency, which cited information from a civic organization.

The advocacy group, known for supporting Palestinian freedom efforts, stated that the Kyriakos X ship carrying activist Kim Dong-hyeon was stopped by Israeli naval forces late Monday, Seoul time, in waters near Cyprus.

The organization added that Kim is thought to be under detention aboard an Israeli military vessel together with several other foreign activists.

Kim had traveled earlier this month toward the Gaza Strip despite a travel restriction enforced by the South Korean authorities on the Palestinian territory.

Meanwhile, another activist, Kim Ah-hyun, is said to be aboard a nearby ship that the organization warned may also be at risk of being seized.

She had previously been detained by Israeli troops during a separate mission to reach Gaza in October before eventually being freed.

The flotilla, made up of over 50 vessels, departed on Thursday from Marmaris, a Turkish coastal district on the Mediterranean, in a renewed effort to challenge the Israeli blockade that has been enforced on Gaza since 2007.
